Although the Historic England listing for this building suggests a build date of circa 1820, Barrington records point towards it being of an earlier construction. An estate map of 1815 shows a building at the location that we assume is the same property. Also, the Beckett Estate was still in Trust and had been since 1793. Therefore, it was either built by William Barrington (2nd Viscount) before 1793 or by an independant person with the agreement of the Trustees during the Trust period. (1793 - 1814).
The name Normanby was closely associated with the Barringtons. They were Lord Normanby and Maria, Marchioness of Normanby. In his lifetime he was Governor of Jamaica, Viceroy of Ireland, a Cabinet Minister in London and an Ambassador in Paris.
