Coronation Festivities 1937 Shrivenham & Watchfield Souvenir Programme

The Coronation of King George VI was celebrated throughout the country and the villages of Watchfield and Shrivenham joined in with the celebrations. This is a souvenir copy of the programme for the festivities.

The photos are from the 'Les Judd Collection.' They portray a procession of local Watchfield people, including a band, making their way to Shrivenham on the occasion of the Coronation of King George 6th. The place they are passing is at Watchfield and was known as 'Maiden's Well.' This is located at the junction of Watchfield High Street and Faringdon Road. Maidens Well was a pond fed by a natural spring and was used anciently by drovers to water their animals. It is now grassed over and the houses of Barrington Road and Shute Avenue now occupy the land in the back ground.
