Attempted Murder at Wanborough

In November 1907, Alfred Avenell (age 54) attempted to murder his wife Eliza Ann Titcombe, in what the jury declared a "fit of temporary insanity" after "great provocation." Fortunaterly, her injuries were not life threatening and she survived, but Avenell took his own life shortly after.

From the 1901 census listing of the address of Alfred Avenell, this incident took place on Rotten Row. Further, the brother of Eliza, Henry Titcombe, lived in 4 Victoria Cottages - a house that can still be found on The High Street today.
