Shrivenham Primary School Building photos

There are three pictures here, one of which is the classic shot of the school which has been used in many displays. There is also a very nice shot of the school taken from the rear and shows the corner of the old lean-to that was certainly there in the 1960s. The bars that the children are playing on is another feature from the 1960's. There is also a photo of the old cottage that was removed to make way for the car park. The back of the cottage is now where the swimming pool is situated. There are also photos of the two prefabricated classroom blocks that were in use for decades but now gone.

The land where the school now stands was considerable in size and must have once represented one of the principal buildings of the village. Up until 1862 it belonged to the Barrington Estate, and we know that there was a house there called Courtnay Cottage. (Information from the Memoirs of Augusta Barrington). We also know from the personal history of Alfred Knapp (see listing number N661) that Courtnay Cottage was a 6 gabled house. It's likely therefore that this location was the principal farm of the Manor of Shrivenham Salop.
