Foundation of Shrivenham School, Monograph No 1 by Edith Jeacock.

The late Edith Jeacock was an enthusiastic member of the Shrivenham History Society and we are indebted to her for the excellent pieces of research that she carried out, and we are still using.

Her researches into the early schooling of Shrivenham began in 1978 when she was in contact with the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in London, and she visited thier archive. The first photos in this listing are from that early contact with the SPCK.

Edith then went on to study and write up her research and produced the, 'Foundation of Shrivenham School in the 18th and 19th centuries' This monograph covers the history of education in Shrivenham up to the opening of the National School in 1863. The Preface was written by  the Chairman of Oxfordshire County Council. The original document can be viewed at the Centre, and a scanned copy in PDF format can be read HERE. Copies were sent to Berkshire's and Oxfordshire's archives.

Recent research (2024) by SHS member Neil Maw, has discovered a document within the Berkshire County Archive at Reading, that identified where the School House and Day House formerly stood. Please see Listing No N194
