Death of Mr Rees Kent in 1921

Death of Mr R. Kent. The death occurred on Thursday in last week, of Mr Rees Kent, a well-known and respected tradesman of this village. Deceased, who was 59 years of age, had up to the time of his death carried on the business of cabinet-maker and dealer in antiques, the former branch of the trade being established here in 1885. Mr Kent was closely associated with the athletics of the village, having been for many years honorary secretary of the cricket and football clubs, and did much to enhance the interests of both branches of sport; he also represented the latter on the council of the North Berks Football Competitions. As a Forester of 33 years standing Mr Kent held the post of Trustee of the Court (Vale of White Horse, No 2161) for the last 12 years of his life. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, the Vicar (Rev. E.F. Hill) officiating. The coffin, which was of polished elm with brass fittings, was borne by four members of the Shrivenham Football Club – Messrs T. Baldwin, C. Clack, G. Buzzard and H. Knight. The mourners were:- Mr C. Kent (brother), Miss L. Kent (niece), Mr F. Kent (nephew), Mrs F. Kent, Mrs Cook (niece), Messrs W.T. & F. Dike (brothers-in-law), Mrs T. Dike, Mr Barker, Mrs Barker (sister-in-law), Mr R. Self, Mrs R. Self (sister-in-law), Messrs F.A. & L. Knapp (cousins), and Mrs J. Knapp. Others present were Messrs T. & H. Fuller, R. Harris, J. Ilott, T. Larkin, W. Hammond (Hon Sec Shrivenham Institute), H. Olliver (Hon Treas Shrivenham Cricket Club), F. Yeates, D. Pocock, F.Chivers and D.S. Skinner. The following represented the Council of the North Berks Football Competitions:- Messrs A.B. Woodley, J.A Nichols & J. Welch. Wreaths were sent from the following:- Lyddy, Fred, Bessie and Mr Angell; Flo & Nellie; Joe & Agnes; Tom, Annie and Family, Bess & Will; Shrivenham Football Club; Major & Mrs H.K. Marshall, Col and Mrs E.H. Bedford Pim; Col & Mrs W.H. Ames; the Officers and Members of the Court “Vale of White Horse,” No 2161 AOF’ and the Council of the North Berks Football Competitions. The funeral arrangements were satisfactorily carried out by Mr J. Knapp, Shrivenham.
