These photographs were dropped off to us by Ron Muir, with the note that most of the farm has now gone. So here we record the farm as best we can. The location is two miles south-east of Shrivenham village. We have included locational maps courtesy of the National Library of Scotland. The photos are likely to be the only ones surviving of this farm, and whereas they are not good quality they are a record. To see the photos please go HERE
We have also added to this listing some information that is held in the Shrivenham Heritage Society archive. It's a transcription of historical information and although the source is not included it appears to be from the Victoria County History. 'Ordeston - Hadstone (Odstone Farm) or Odstone Lands. In 1086 the kand was held by King Edward who placed as tenant William Fitz Richard. He was a predecessor of the family of Croup - Crupe or Scoop, one of the Knights who placed his signature to the Deed of Magna Carter. Another such Knight, Simon Fitz Hughe who in 1219 held a Knight's fee in Ordeston, later sold the Manor to Henry Shottisbrook in exchange for land at Ore, a hamlet near Marlborough in Wiltshire. The family held this Manor and its estate in succession, and in 1424 bought the neighbouring manor of Becote (Beckett) at Shrivenham. The descent of Ordeston is the same as Beckett, the farm at Ruffinswick appears as pasture land held by the Manor.'
Also included is a newspaer extract from 1845 that shows the contents of the farm that had been worked by Thomas Whitfield before he left.
