Longcott Vestry Minutes Book 1819 - 1894

The discovery of this book sheds new light on the history of the village of Longcott. The Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor held regular meetings called Vestries, because historically they were held in the Vestry of the church. But, as time passed, such meetings were still called the same, even if they were held elsewhere. The meetings covered in this book range in date from the earliest in 1819 to 1894. The subjects discussed at the meetings reflect life in a small Berkshire village 200 years ago. The book is in good condition but some of the hand-wrtten entries have faded and difficult to read.

Also in this listing is the Overseers Accounts book, that deals with the money collected by the Overseers of the Poor and to where it was spent. The dates covered are from 1868 to 1888. There are pages with Auditors remarks written in for disallownace and the reasons why.
