Account by Chris (Christine) Hull about her railway father Albert Carter during the Second World War. Mentions German prisoners of war working on the Beckett Estate and injured American soldiers in ambulance sidings. Also the tragic event of Albert's death in August 1947, when he was riding his bycicle down West Mill hill at Watchfield and lost control on passing over the bridge. Unfortunately, he struck his head on the Wilts & Berks boundary stone that rendered him unconscious and he was only found about three hours later by a passing farmer - sadly deceased.
We also have two photographs from his son Clive; one showing Albert in the Signalbox and another showing Shrivenham Station circa 1841.
We are always on the look-out for more information about Shrivenham and district. If you have old photos, know of historical facts, old documents (especially deeds) please contact us...
