The Hearth Tax for Shrivenham Oct 1662

Like most taxes, the Hearth Taxes of the 17th century were very unpopular. The newly installed King Charles II had ro raise money, and to charge people 1 shilling for every hearth they possessed in their houses was thought to be a fair way of administering it. Many of the poor classes were excluded. Today, they are interesting documents and provide us with a glimpse of who was living locally. Below is one of the collections for Shrivenham.
