The White Horse at Uffington is an internationally known historical monument. Cut into the chalk downland overlooking the village of Uffington, it makes a statement. It's as though it was put there as a marker of territory and it's quite likely that this was the case. Historically it was thought to be of Saxon or Roman origin but Optically Stimulated Luminescence testing carried out by Oxford Archaeology in the 1990s has dated it from between 1380 -550 BC, the late Bronze Age to early Iron Age. It's therefore quite feasable that this was the mark of the territory of the tribe called the Atrebates, a similar styled horse featured on some of their coinage.
